Blue Duck Pilots in Laredo and El Paso Extended

Laredo Extends Additional Six Months; El Paso Extends Additional 12 Months

SAN ANTONIO, 13 JANUARY 2020 — Blue Duck, a Texas-based electric scooter operator with fleets in cities across South and West Texas, the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and Bryan, Texas, near the Texas A&M campus, announces that Laredo and El Paso, two cities it serves, have extended their pilot programs.

Laredo and El Paso’s city councils have passed extensions of their respective pilot programs, featuring Blue Duck scooters. Laredo extended its six-month program by six months; El Paso extended its twelve-month pilot for another year. The extensions will allow each city to continue outreach efforts and collect more data to inform planning and regulatory efforts for longer-term micromobility programs.

“Like many other cities, Laredo and El Paso both have plans calling for the development of alternative means of transportation to solve the last-mile issue, and reduce traffic congestion with eco-friendly options,” said Blue Duck’s Senior Director of Government Partnerships, Megan McNamara. “Using scooters for short trips around town or to get to and from work or the bus stop can have a real impact in reducing automotive traffic and emissions in the city,” she added.

Blue Duck operates its fleets in Laredo and El Paso seven days a week. Users can locate scooters and unlock them using the Blue Duck app, which they can download for free from Apple’s App Store or Google Play. The company also offers three access programs to make scooters accessible to low-income residents, students, and veterans and active duty service members. Information on these programs is available on the company website at flyblueduck.com/access.

BLUE DUCK LAUNCHES FLEET IN EDINBURG, TEXAS

First Municipal Scooter-Sharing Program in Lower Rio Grande Valley

SAN ANTONIO, 20 December 2019 – Blue Duck, a San Antonio-based electric scooter operator, will launch its fleet in Edinburg, Texas on December 30th. The City of Edinburg is leading the way in micromobility with the first municipal scooter sharing program in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

City officials and staff will join representatives of Blue Duck in the courtyard of City Hall at 10:00 a.m. that day to introduce the program to the community. City staff will review the objectives of the program and Blue Duck staff will discuss operational details and demonstrate how the scooters are used.

“Blue Duck has been great about working with Edinburg to make sure the e-scooters are integrated into our community in a safe, smart way,” said Mayor Richard Molina. “This is going to be a tremendous help especially around the courthouse area where mobility is restricted and finding parking is so frustrating. Now you can just hop on a scooter and get where you need to go quickly, safely and affordably.”

“We had the pleasure of attending an Edinburg Community Forum in October where we had the opportunity to hear directly from the community. We got some valuable input and addressed some really great questions and concerns,” said Blue Duck Government Relations Manager Alec Martinez. “We look forward to continuing that conversation in a Q&A at the launch event,” added Mr. Martinez.

Blue Duck representatives will be giving away helmets and t-shirts to attendees at the event.

Blue Duck will operate its fleet in Edinburg between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. seven days a week. Users can locate scooters and unlock them using the Blue Duck app, which they can download from Apple’s App Store or Google Play.

Blue Duck First to Operate Scooter Sharing Agreement in Ireland

Partners with Dublin City University for Private Road Pilot

SAN ANTONIO AND DUBLIN, December 10, 2019 – Blue Duck, a San Antonio-based operator of electric scooters, announces a joint venture with Dublin-based Luna and Dublin City University to pilot Luna’s centimeter-level GPS technology.

The pilot project will take place on Dublin City University’s private campus roads in partnership with the university. Currently, electric scooters are prohibited from public roads in Ireland but a recent bill to amend the Irish Road Traffic Act 1961 to regulate the use of electric scooters indicates a potential shift on the horizon. Blue Duck is the first electric scooter company to enter an agreement to operate in the country.

Luna is a telematic device which aims to enable scooter operators to pinpoint the location of their scooters with an accuracy of five centimeters. Current GPS technology’s accuracy is measured in meters.

Blue Duck CEO Michael Keane said “We were excited to learn about Luna’s centimeter-level GPS technology when it was announced two months ago. That level of precision would allow us to locate our scooters more efficiently and would lead to stricter compliance with geofencing requirements. A successful outcome of this pilot test could lead to significant enhancements to our ability to manage our fleets responsibly while providing exceptional service to our partners and riders.”

Luna is a consortium of European industry leaders in fleet management solutions, sensor-to-cloud technologies and connected mobility analytics. These include Transpoco, a leader in vehicle tracking and fleet management solutions and Taoglas, the world’s leading provider of next-generation IoT solutions.

“We are delighted to have already found a pilot partner, particularly one which is so focused on fleet management,” stated Luna CEO Andrew Fleury. “Our partnership with Blue Duck will generate invaluable data which aims to inform policy here in Ireland and once commercially launched, will hopefully pave a path towards the adoption of this form of technology,” Fleury added.

Company Continues to Expand Presence in Texas

“We are excited to land in El Paso,” said Megan McNamara, Senior Director of Government Partnerships for Blue Duck. “In addition to bringing our brand new next-generation scooters, we are investing in the local economy, creating jobs as we hire an operations team from the community and lease warehouse space here.”

With fleets in Corpus Christi, Laredo, Bryan, Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, Brooks in San Antonio, and El Paso, and opening soon in Edinburg, Blue Duck Scooters remains focused on serving small to mid-sized Texas cities seeking creative approaches to solving transportation challenges. “Cities of all sizes benefit from our eco-friendly, low-cost last-mile transportation solution,” said Mr. Keane. Blue Duck Taps Joyride tech to power rapid fleet expansion

Joyride’s tools facilitate Blue Duck’s deployment to new markets

San Antonio, Texas, September 12, 2019 — Blue Duck Scooters has adopted Joyride’s platform for managing fleet operations and rider experience. Joyride is a global leader in Mobility as a Service (Maas) whose applications enable Blue Duck’s rapid deployment as it doubles the size of its fleet of scooters in coming weeks.

Joyride’s software solution includes the user app that riders download and configure to unlock Blue Duck’s scooters on their iOS and Android devices; the operator app that allows the field operations team to manage the fleet; and the web-based administrative dashboard which integrates payment processing and gives Blue Duck full control of all aspects of fleet management and customer support.

Blue Duck Chief Executive Officer Eric Bell said, “Joyride’s industry-leading innovative platform is more secure, more reliable, and more scalable than our previous software solution.” He added, “Blue Duck will become the partner-of-choice for cities, universities, and companies worldwide by offering our riders an exceptional experience they can’t get elsewhere. Joyride will be an integral component of meeting that objective.”

With Joyride’s geofencing, Blue Duck can quickly roll out its fleet in full compliance with local ordinances, restricting its operations to those areas permitted by law and in observance of any local curfew regulations. Joyride’s built-in Mobility Data Specification (MDS) and General Bikeshare Feed Specification (GBFS) APIs enable Blue Duck to share ridership data with its municipal partners. Finally, Joyride’s hardware-agnostic platform allows Blue Duck to manage its fleet of scooters that consists of a blend of makes and models from different vendors.

Vince Cifani, Founder and CEO of Toronto-based Joyride said, “The folks at Blue Duck have a compelling vision for the future of micromobility. We are honored to partner with them in delivering an exceptional rider experience in all of their markets.”
